TIA Supports International Intelligent Transport Systems Leaders as World Experts Study High-Tech Intelligent Transport Systems to Increase Safety, Efficiency and Development

More than 150 participants from over 20 countries, as well as from regional and international organizations, gathered in Cape Town, South Africa, on October 2-6 for meetings and workshops of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 204 (Intelligent Transport Systems – ITS).  The activities made positive contributions to international standards that facilitate trade, sustainable development, security, health and safety issues, and enable technological advances that will transform the way people travel and communicate.  The ISO/TC-204 meeting took place in Cape Town at the invitation of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and the head of the South African delegation, Neil Frost.  SABS provided organizational, technical and logistical support in collaboration with the newly-transitioning American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-designated Secretariat, TIA.  This was TIA’s first meeting as TC-204 Secretariat; the association will be responsible for overall administrative and technical support for the committee.

TIA President Matthew J. Flanigan noted, “TIA has been active in our sector’s portion of Intelligent Transportation Systems standards work for more than a decade.  What is new for TIA is we are now the administrator for the U.S. Technical Advisory Group that represents U.S. interests on ITS matters across the board in all aspects of ITS standards work, as well as being the International Secretariat to this ISO Technical Committee.  We are also participating in the planning for a World Standards Cooperation (WSC) (ISO, International Telecommunication Union, International Electrotechnical Commission) Workshop and Exhibition next year called ‘The Fully Networked Car’ March 2007 at the Geneva Motor Show, one of the world’s leading automotive events.”

As part of the ISO committee meetings, three workshops were held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss common worldwide transport issues and how international standards can help address these challenges.  The specific topics of the well-attended workshops were “Using Web Services and Extensible Markup Language (XML) in ITS”; an ISO/TC-204 Outreach Workshop: “Intelligent Solutions for Transport Challenges”; and “Electronic Fee Collection.”  The success of the ISO workshops was a result of the participation and attendance of local and transportation specialists from all spheres of industry, academia and government.

TC-204 Chair and Connexis Vice President for Global Automotive Initiatives Michael Noblett stated he was very pleased the committee could meet in this beautiful city.   In addition to a productive meeting and workshops, he had a beneficial meeting with Provincial Minister Fransman and the Deputy Mayor of Cape Town, Councilor Arendse regarding which transportation initiatives and models to consider.  Noblett commented, “Intelligent Transport Systems technologies are not magic, they are tools for sustained community progress and development of systems compatible to future growth.  Future infrastructure and resulting economic growth will benefit from public sector support.”

The countries whose delegates attended the TC-204 Plenary, Heads of Delegations’ (HOD) and Working Group meetings in Cape Town were Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States.  The next international meeting of ISO/TC-204 will be held in April 2007, hosted by ANSI and the U.S. Delegation.
