ISO/TC204 to Publish International Standard for Basic ERI

The International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 204 for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS); ISO/TC204 is proud to announce the upcoming publication of ISO International Standard 24535: Automatic vehicle identification — Basic electronic registration identification (Basic ERI).

Developed in ISO/TC204’s Working Group 4 (Automotive vehicle & equipment identification), Basic ERI is a simple electronic system that uniquely identifies a registered vehicle and promises to improve road safety, enhance traffic management, deter crime and help enhance operation efficiency of public authorities. Basic ERI can also be used to support end-of-life mandatory provisions, such as Directive 2000/53/EC of the European Parliament on end-of-life vehicles (ELV directive).

As both the International Secretariat to ISO/TC204, as well as the the administrator of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/TC204, TIA plays a critical role in bringing these important technologies to market.  If you would like to participate in the development of these proposed standards or wish to receive additional information on the work of ISO/TC204 or the US TAG, please contact Tyler Messa at: tmessa@tiaonline.org or +1.703.907.7743

ISO/TC Begins Work on Three Road Safety Standards

The International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 204 for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS); ISO/TC204, is proud to announce the commencement of work on three proposed international standards designed to significantly improve vehicle/roadway safety.  Currently being developed by Working Group 14, Vehicle/roadway warning and control systems, the proposed standards make use of preventative technologies aimed at helping prevent vehicle collisions. They include:

  • Lane keeping assist systems (LKAS)
  • Curve speed warning systems (CSWS)
  • Adaptive cruise control systems (ACC)

As both the International Secretariat to ISO/TC204, as well as the the administrator of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/TC204, TIA plays a critical role in bringing these important technologies to market. If you would like to participate in the development of these proposed standards, or wish to receive additional information on the work of ISO/TC204 or the US TAG, please contact Tyler Messa at: tmessa@tiaonline.org or 703.907.7743

In Letter to Congress, TIA Addresses GAO Inaccuracies on Project 25 Progress

TIA sent a letter to Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) and Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio) on April 20 responding to the Government Accountability Office's (GAO) report entitled "FIRST RESPONDERS: Much Work Remains to Improve Communications Interoperability" (GAO-07-301). Project 25 (P25) is an interoperability suite of standards for digital two-way wireless communications products and systems. The P25 standards are created by a committee of manufacturers, public safety agencies, and state and federal communications professionals to provide detailed standards for the design of communications systems so all purchasers of P25-compatible equipment can communicate with each other. See the details in the P25 letter.

As the publisher of the P25 standards, TIA takes its role in improving the technology that supports first responders very seriously and agrees with the GAO's conclusion that "a comprehensive suite of standards such as Project 25 is critical to achieving interoperability among different manufacturers' products." However, TIA believes the report contains a number of misleading statements that could lead to an inaccurate perception of the current state of interoperability.

In its letter, TIA highlighted that the P25 effort has resulted in the publication of 125 documents that support interoperability for public safety networks and that these documents "have been endorsed by numerous agencies including the Federal Communications Commission, the National Communications System, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Interior and the Department of Justice."

TIA contested the GAO's assertion that "a lack of compliance testing has limited product interoperability." While TIA is troubled about many of the GAO's findings, the letter concluded by reiterating TIA's commitment to improving communications interoperability at all levels of government.
