The International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 204 for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS); ISO/TC204 has just announced that its 31st meeting will take place April14-18, 2008, in Munich. More than 120 participants from over 20 countries will gather for the meeting.

ISO is the premier organization for international ITS standardization, and the weeklong series of meetings will focus on diverse sets of emerging ITS standards in fields such as architecture; database technologies; automotive vehicle and equipment identification; fee and toll collection; general fleet management and commercial/freight; public transport/emergency; integrated transport information, management and control; traveler information systems; vehicle/roadway warning and control systems; dedicated short range communications; and wide area communications/protocols and interfaces.

The meetings will cover the entire committee program of work, including the introduction of new work items. Meeting highlights will include:

  • A full discussion about the new Working Group 17 “Nomadic Devices in ITS Systems,” which will hold its inaugural meeting March 12, 2008, in Jeju Island, Korea. In addition to logistical discussions, the meeting will also mark the commencement of a new technical report to investigate and identify the standardization requirements to enable nomadic devices to serve as interfaces to support ITS Service provision and multimedia use into vehicles. All interested parties are welcome to attend either the Working Group 17 meeting in Korea or the follow-up discussions in Munich.

  • The inaugural meeting of the Korean-led “Ubiquitous City Task Force.” A ubiquitous city (U-city) is a city or region with ubiquitous information technology; all information systems are linked, interconnected, and virtually everything is linked to an information systems through digital radio, wireless networking, WiMAX/WiBro or RFID/USN. The task force is designed to The plan proposes that the taskforce will act for two years in 2008-2009 to crystallize the concept/services of U-city; the requirements for standarization; and various recommendations. The discussion will focus on, but not be limited to, transport related issues.

As both the International Secretariat to ISO/TC204 and the the administrator to the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) to TC204, TIA plays a critical role in steering the overall strategic direction of the committee, as well as providing overall administrative and technical support. If you would like to participate in the development of these proposed standards or wish to receive additional information on the work of ISO/TC204 or the US TAG, please contact Tyler Messa at: tmessa@tiaonline.org or +1.703.907.7743.
