TR-41, 3GPP2/TR-45 Meeting Update

TIA's TR-41 User Premises Telecommunications Requirements Engineering Committee met last week in Albuquerque, N.M., to discuss issues of importance to the various subcommittees as well as to hold subcommittee elections.

The TR-41.3 Analog and Digital Wireline Terminals Subcommittee held its election. Al Baum of Uniden was elected Chair, while Jim Bress of AST Labs Inc., was chosen as Vice-Chair. This represents a switch; Baum was the former Vice-Chair while Bress was the former Chair.  The TR-41.7 Environmental and Safety Considerations Subcommittee held its election last week, as well. Randy Ivans of UL was elected Chair, and Phil Havens of Littlefuse was elected Vice Chair.

This week 3GPP2 and the TR-45 Mobile and Personal Communications Systems Standards Committee's various subcommittees wrapped up a meeting in Osaka, Japan, that began last week.

The full TR-45 Committee will meet November 29-30 in Kauai, Hawaii.  The committee is chaired by Cheryl J. Blum of Alcatel-Lucent. The following week, December 3-7, TR-45's subcommittees will meet to discuss issues pertinent to their specific areas of responsibility.

TIA Engineering Committee Invoices Due

This week, the invoicing period for TIA's various Engineering Committees begins. TIA staff will notify committee participants of their 2008 dues via traditional and electronic mail.

This is an opportunity for participating companies to renew their commitment to developing and maintaining relevant, leading standards on an equal footing with potential competitors and business partners alike.

More than 1,100 individuals, representing manufacturers, service providers and end-users, including the government, serve on TIA's Engineering Committees. To ensure representation for the positions of U.S. telecommunications equipment producers in the international arena, TIA also participates in international standards-setting activities, such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The submission deadline for 2008 dues payments is Jan 31, 2008.

FO-4 Committee members should take note that as the committee merges with TR-42, 2008 invoices will be for TR-42. .

Those interested in participating in the standards process or wanting more information on the invoicing process, please contact Stephanie  Montgomery at +1.703.907.7735 or smontgomery@tiaonline.org.

ISO to Examine Standardization Challenges for Ubiquitous City

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Intelligent Transport Systems (TC204) has approved a technical report, ISO TR 28682 World Report for ITS Standards, a joint APEC ( Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) -ISO study of progress in develop ing and deploying ITS standards. The report includes the current status of ITS standardization worldwide and recommendations for standards-developing organizations and goverments.

One of the recommendations is that TC204 and its liaisons (ISO/ International Electrotechnical Commission Joint Technical Committee 1, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, etc.) identify the challenges for ubiquitous cities. A ubiquitous city (u-City) is a city or region with ubiquitous information technology; all information systems are linked, or interconnected, and virtually everything is linked to an information system through digital radio, wireless networking, WiMAX/WiBro, RFID/USN or other advanced networking technology.

To implement the recommendation, TC204 resolved to organize a task force and adopted an activity plan presented by the Korean government at ISO's Qingdao plenary. The plan proposes that the task force act for two years in 2008-2009 to crystalize the concept and services of u-City, requirements for standarization and develop other recommendations. The discussion will focus on, but not be limited to, transport-related issues.

TC204 will hold the first taskforce meeting on April 15-18, 2008, in Munich. The TC204 secretariat and Korea will circulate invitation letter shortly.

For more information about the u-City taskforce, please contact TC204 Secretary Tyler Messa at +1.703.907.7743 or TMessa@tiaonline.org.
