TIA's TR-48 Committee Elects Inaugural Officers

TIA's TR-48, Vehicular Telematics committee elected its first officers this week. The newly-created committee has chosen Kevin Lu of Telcordia as Chair and David Kraft of QUALCOMM as Vice-Chair.

Major Publication Underway in TR-45.2

Publishing began last week of a 50-part ANSI document for the TR-45.2 Core Networks - Mobile and Personal Communications Standards subcommittee. The document contains descriptions of various recently-solidified standards regarding wireless features.

Barring any delays, the document should be fully processed and published within a month, according to subcommitte participants and TIA staff. 

Meanwhile, all the TR-45 subcommittees are meeting in Long Beach, Calif., this week, where they are continuing to discuss, edit and write wireless standards.  The next full TR-45 meetings will take place November 29-30 in Kauai, Hawaii.

30th Meeting of ISO/TC204 Begins in October in Qingdao, China

More than 120 participants from more than 20 countries will gather in Qingdao, China, October 15-19 for the 30th meeting of the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 204 for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) –ISO/TC204. ISO/TC204 is the premier organization for international ITS standardization, and the weeklong series of meetings will focus on diverse set of emerging ITS standards in such fields as architecture, database technologies, automotive vehicle and equipment identification, fee and toll collection, general fleet management and commercial/freight, public transport/emergency, integrated transport information, management and control, traveler information systems, vehicle/roadway warning and control systems, dedicated short range communications, and wide area communications/protocols and interfaces.

The five-day series of meetings will cover the entire committee program of work, including the introduction of new work items. Anticipated highlights and new work items will include:

  • Lawful Interception in ITS and Communications Access for Land Mobiles (CALM)
  • Data retention for law enforcement in ITS and CALM
  • A discussion of the succesful new project ballot: ISO/AWI 10992: The use of nomadic devices to support ITS service and multimedia  provision in vehicles, and the possible formation of Working Group 17 (Nomadic Devices) for future standardization in this field. 

As both the International Secretariat of ISO/TC204, as well as the the administrator of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to TC204, TIA plays a critical role in steering the overall strategic direction of the committee, as well as providing overall administrative and technical support.

Last Week

TR-42 Still Busy After Last Week's Meeting

Important information relevant to participants in TIA's TR-42 User Premises Telecommunications Cabling Infrastructure and FO-4 Fiber Optics committees continues to emerge in the wake of last week's meeting in Palm Springs, Calif. Several key dates for future events have been changed, and TIA staff has made new association resources available for the committees.

At the meeting, the technical committee approved the merger of FO-4 and TR-42, to take place at the February meeting.  Committee Chair and subcommittee Chair/Vice-chair elections will be held in February for TR-42/FO-4, TR-42.2, TR-42.6, TR-42.8, FO-4.2, FO-04.4 and FO-4.5. 

TIA staffer Marianna Kramarikova observed the election results for TR-42.  The following Chairs and Vice-chairs were elected by affirmation:

TR-42.1: Henry Franc (Chair) and Glenn Sexton (Vice-chair)
TR-42.3: Ray Emplit (Chair) and Rich Jones (Vice-chair)
TR-42.5: Paul Kish (Chair) and Ray Emplit (Vice-chair)
TR-42.7: Valerie Rybinski (Chair) and Sterling Vaden (Vice-chair)
TR-42.9: Bob Lounsbury (Chair) and Brian Shuman (Vice-chair)

The next meeting for the committees is scheduled for February 4-8, 2008, in San Antonio, Texas; Austin, Texas, is slated as the backup site. That meeting will be followed on June 2-6, 2008, tentatively scheduled for Providence, R.I. Finally, next year's fall meeting will be held October 6-108, in either Portland, Ore., or Vancouver, B.C.

The TR-42.9 Telecommunications Copper Cabling Systems subcommittee will hold a conference call Tuesday, October 16, to approve the Palm Springs meeting report and continue comment resolution.  The call will convene at 2:00 p.m. and adjourn at 4:00 p.m..  Call in at +1.816.650.0723 and enter the passcode 06905#.  Web participants should go to https://rockwellautomation.webex.com/rockwellautomation and type in the following user information:

Committee TR-47, Subcommittees TR-47.1 and TR-47.2 to Hold December Elections

Committee TR-47 Terrestrial Mobile Multimedia Multicast and SubcommitteesTR-47.1 Terrestrial Mobile Multimedia Multicast based on Forward Link Only Technology and TR-47.2 Terrestrial Mobile Multimedia Multicast based on DVB-H Technology will hold elections in December for Chair and Vice-chair positions.  Both officers will serve two-year terms.

Candidates' employers should submit a letter of support to the parent committee chair and to TIA Vice President, Standards and Business Development, Ed Mikoski, confirming that the candidate and employer will commit the time and resources required in fulfilling the position.

Following is the process used for TIA elections per section 4 of the TIA Engineering Manual:

  1. Nomination letters and letters of support for Chair and Vice-chair shall be sent to TIA's Vice President, Standards and Business Development, and copied to the current TR-47 leadership team.

    Letters of Support should be sent to Ed Mikoski, emikoski@tiaonline.org with copies to Marianna Kramarikova, mkramarikova@tiaonline.org and the TR-47.2 Chairperson, Carolyn.Taylor@motorola.com.
  2. Candidates are asked to submit a statement of interest, qualifications and objectives to the Standards Secretariat, who will distribute it with the name of the nominee.
  3. At least 30 days before the designated election meeting, the names of nominees for Chair and Vice-chair will be sent by the Standards Secretariat to the organizations in good standing listed on the quorum list of the Formulating Group.
  4. Please Note: Before the election, additional nominations from the floor are permitted. Each nomination from the floor shall be accompanied by a written letter of support from the employer of the candidate and a statement of interest, qualifications and objectives for their proposed administration.
  5. Voting for the Chair and Vice-chair shall be by the organizations in good standing listed on the quorum list of the Formulating Group. Elections shall be conducted via secret ballot. Official ballots shall be provided to the Formulating Group by the Standards Secretariat.
  6. The election will be conducted by the current chair or duly appointed neutral party (preferably TIA staff) at a plenary meeting of the Formulating Group.
