TIA and ISO/TC204 to Publish Technical Report on Unified Modeling Language (UML) for ITS Systems

The International Organization for Standardization’s Technical Committee 204 (ISO/TC204) for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), has announced the upcoming publication of ISO/TR 24529: “Systems architecture – Use of 'Unified Modeling Language' in ITS International Standards and Deliverables.”

Falling under the jurisdiction of Working Group 1 (Architecture) and led by the United Kingdom, this technical report is designed to “…provide guidance on the use of the "Unified Modeling Language" [UML] in the development of standards for "Intelligent Transport Systems" [ITS].

The advantages of applying UML to the development of ITS include the following:

UML provides an internationally standardized form of system model that should be readily interpreted anywhere world-wide.

  • UML enables cohesive description from multiple user views.
  • Extensive training and tool support for UML are available.
  • UML is capable of manipulation by a metadata registry for ITS.
  • UML tools enable conversion directly to computer coding.
  • UML is very widely used in the architecture, design and development of software-intensive systems.1

It is anticipated that this technical report will be officially published and available for purchase beginning April 26, 2008.

As both the ISO/TC204 International Secretariat and the Administrator of the U.S. TAG – the domestic mirror committee to ISO/TC204 – TIA plays a central role in helping shape standardization in this emerging and dynamic field. Membership in the U.S. TAG is open to all materially affected organizations with a U.S. presence. There is currently no fee to join the U.S. TAG, although sponsorships are welcome. To participate in the technical work of either group, or to find out about attending the next meeting of the U.S. TAG as an observer, please contact Tyler Messa at: tmessa@tiaonline.org or +1.703.907.7743.

TR-45 Meetings Update

The most recent TIA TR-45 subcommittee meetings were held March 31 to April 4 in Montreal, Quebec. TR-45 meets to discuss and approve documents for balloting or publishing, as well as to address members’ comments on various documents. The following is a summary of some of the actions taken at the meeting.

The following documents, Mobile Application Part: Voice Feature Scenarios: Subscriber PIN Access/Subscriber PIN Intercept (SPINA/SPINI) (SP-3-3590.333-RV5/TIA-41.333-E), and Mobile Application Part: Voice Feature Scenarios: Voice Message Retrieval (VMR) (SP-3-3590.334-RV5/TIA-41.334-E) were both approved for ANSI 45-day ballot

TIA-41.000-E-6[E], Mobile Application Part (MAP): Introduction to MAP was approved for TIA publication and the associated TIA-41-E documents were approved for ANSI publication:

  • TIA-41.325-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Voice Feature Scenarios: "Conference Calling"
  • TIA-41.326-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Voice Feature Scenarios: "Do Not Disturb"
  • TIA-41.327-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Voice Feature Scenarios: "Flexible Alerting"
  • TIA-41.328-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Voice Feature Scenarios: "Mobile Access Hunting"
  • TIA-41.329-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Voice Feature Scenarios: "Message Waiting Notification"
  • TIA-41.330-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Voice Feature Scenarios: "Password Call Acceptance / Selective Call Acceptance"
  • TIA-41.331-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Voice Feature Scenarios: "Priority Access and Channel Assignment"
  • TIA-41.332-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Voice Feature Scenarios: "Remote Feature Control"
  • TIA-41.71-E, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Broadcast Teleservice Transport Capability
  • TIA-41.630-E-2, Mobile Application Part (MAP) – Basic Call Processing

TIA Standards Committee Meetings

On April 10 and 11, TIA Technical Standards Subcommittee (TSSC) and TIA Technical Committee (TC) held quarterly meetings.  During the TSSC meeting, each committee chair provided a report on recent events in their committees. Issues of interest were the imminent publication of the third revision to TIA-568 Commercial Building Wiring standards, the continuing development of a Home Networking over Power Wiring standard, the publication of TIA-1003 Voice over Wireless LAN (VoWLAN) and the development of a joint standard on Commercial Mobile Service Provider’s Gateway, as well as many other activities.

The TC Chair invited Nan Chen, President of Metropolitan Ethernet Forum (MEF), to give a presentation about the work of MEF to the TC members. Chen presented an enlightening report on the forum's mission, working model and future goals. Reports were given on the status of legislative and regulatory work TIA is monitoring, the progress of the 13th Global Standards Collaboration meeting planning and a report on the international standards development programs TIA supports.
