Healthy economic growth in Latin America has created an environment favorable to investment in telecommunications infrastructure, much of which has been focused on wireless and is now shifting to high-speed upgrades, according to the TIA 2008 Telecommunications Market Review and Forecast recently released by the association.
The 400-page annual report is used by hundreds of companies to plan their business strategies, budgets, R&D and marketing efforts. Sections include landline, wireless, equipment and international markets, with 450 charts and tables illustrating the detailed text.
Some of the TIA data about Latin America includes:
- The number of broadband subscribers will triple during the next four years to 51 million by 2011, a 32.4 percent compound annual increase
- Penetration will significantly improve from 3.2 subscriptions per 100 people in 2007 to 9.4 in 2011
- Broadband will pass dial-up in 2008 and by 2011 will account for 84 percent of all Internet connections
- The surging wireless market rose a cumulative 51 percent in 2006 and 2007 after nearly doubling during the prior two years
- By 2007, there were 3.7 times as many wireless subscribers as landlines subscribers
- Carriers are looking to introduce value-added services, upgrading their networks to 3G to facilitate services such as music downloaded to mobile phones
- TIA expects continued double-digit wireless market growth in 2008, with mid-to-high single-digit increases projected for 2009-2011
- By 2011, wireless subscribers in Latin America will total 493.4 million, up 8.4 percent on a compound annual basis from 2007
