São Paulo State Bill Proposes Ban on Non-Rechargeable Batteries

brazil_flagAt the same time the National Environmental Council (CONAMA) is in the final debate over revisions to its existing battery disposal rule (Resolution 257/99), a member of Congress in São Paulo state has proposed a bill that would ban nonrechargeable batteries and require producer take-back for all rechargeable batteries. Given the importance of the São Paulo market, this bill has potential to impact EIATRACK members with operations or sales in Brazil.

ENERGY STAR Specification for Set-Top Boxes Announced

USA1On April 23, 2008, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a new ENERGY STAR specification for set-top boxes (STBs). According to the EPA, cable, satellite and telecom STBs that meet the Version 2.0 specification will be 30% more efficient than conventional models. Game consoles and digital television adapters are excluded from the new specification.

EuP in Bulgaria Update

BulgariaBulgariaA Special Report on Energy-using Products in Bulgaria has been created. This report discusses the amendment to the Bulgarian TRP Law implementing the EU Directive on the eco-design of energy-using products (the "EuP Directive"). The EuP Directive is a framework directive; products are not be subject to eco-design or energy efficiency requirements until implementing measures (so-called "Commission Directives") have been issued.

EPA Signs MOU with The Green Grid to Promote Energy Efficiency in Small Computer Rooms

USA2The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Green Grid, a consortium of companies dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computer ecosystems, to develop and promote best practices for the “greening” of computer facilities. The MOU was formalized in a signing ceremony held in Washington, D.C.
