Voice-, Data-Centric Applications Grow as Bandwidth Increases

Thanks to improved bandwidth capacities for networking, voice- and data-centric applications are on a strong growth curve. According to the recently-released TIA 2008 Telecommunications Market Review and Forecast, the enterprise voice-centric market reached a milestone in 2007, and the demand for data applications requiring increased bandwidth has become the principal driver of equipment and services associated with data-centric markets.

The voice-centric milestone: The installed base of Internet protocol (IP) and converged PBX systems passed the installed base of traditional PBXs last year, according to TIA’s new 400-page report. Unified communications (UC) and fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) have emerged as the key drivers propelling the migration to IP.

New standards, such as TIA-568-B.2-10 Transmission Performance Specification for 4-pair 100Ω Augmented Category 6 Cabling, have emerged for Augmented Category 6 (Cat6A) cabling, which is optimized for 10GBASE-T Ethernet and is being deployed at enterprises shifting from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet at 1,000 Mbps and beyond.

 Some highlights from the report:

  • Since 2000, more lines have been added than in the previous year, with 10.3 million net new converged lines introduced in 2007. In 2008, TIA predicts that the gain will be an even larger 11.6 million lines.

  • By 2011, the IP/converged PBX installed base will be 3.5 times larger than the traditional installed base in 2007.

  • Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) business revenue rose 31.3 percent in 2007 to $8.4 billion, and double-digit annual gains are expected through 2010, with revenue expected to rise to $14.2 billion by 2011.

  • Unified communications has emerged as the main driver of convergence. UC revenue rose 15.1 percent in 2007, accelerating from 14.1 percent in 2006. TIA looks for even faster increases of 16 percent or more during the next two years.

  • The overall videoconferencing market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 5.5 percent, from $2.1 billion in 2007 to $2.55 billion in 2011.

Hundreds of companies use TIA’s annual market forecast and its 450+ tables and figures to plan marketing strategies, target R&D money, and strategize for the future of their business. Your company can do the same by using this valuable resource.
