TIA and ISO/TC204 to Publish Specification on Traffic and Travel Information Messages for Geographic Data Dictionaries

TC-204The International Organization for Standardization’s Technical Committee 204 (ISO/TC204) for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) has announced the upcoming publication of ISO/Technical Specification 14823: Traffic and Travel Information (TTI) — Messages via media independent stationary dissemination systems — Graphic data dictionary for pre-trip and in-trip information dissemination systems. Adopting unified graphic data, the specification is expected to improve the understandability of the graphic information by users to increase the convenience of TTI systems.

Developed in cooperation with the European Committee for Standardization’s Technical Committee 278 (CEN/TC278) for Road Transport and Traffic Telematics, the new specification calls for development of a Graphic Data Dictionary (GDD) to create a common basis for transmitting data that, irrespective of language or regional differences, can be decoded and understood by the users who obtain TTI (pre-trip and in-trip information) service through system operators such as traffic management centres (TMCs), traffic information centres (TICs) and value-added service providers (VASPs), adding value to the TTI.

As both the ISO/TC204 International Secretariat and the Administrator of the U.S. TAG – the domestic mirror committee – to ISO/TC204, TIA plays a central role in helping shape standardization in this emerging and dynamic field. Membership in the U.S. TAG is open to all materially affected organizations with a U.S. presence. Currently there is no fee to join the U.S. TAG, although sponsorships are welcome. If you would like to participate in the technical work of either group, or are interested in attending the next meeting of the U.S. TAG as an observer, please contact Tyler Messa at: tmessa@tiaonline.org or +1.703.907.7743

TIA Updates Bulletin on Best Practices for Wireless Systems Performance

TIA has issued a new bulletin, TSB-88.3-C, Wireless Communications Systems Performance in Noise and Interference – Limited Situations, Part 3: Performance Verification, to help wireless companies meet compatibility needs. The bulletin addresses the increasing spectrum allocation complexity, such as the FCC’s “spectrum refarming” of frequency bands, as well as various and new entities involved in a wireless communications system.

The update provides guidance in establishing standardized methodology of modeling the various interference mechanisms to support frequency coordinators in determining the best assignments for the available pool of frequencies and to validate and quantify the performance and compatibility of wireless communications systems that have varying modulations, geographic operating areas and applications. This empirical validation and quantification is integral to proof-of-performance and acceptance testing, as well as to quantify the actual interference environment, versus simulated predictions in interference-limited systems.

TSB-88.3-C specifies conformance testing to determine whether a wireless communications system meets a user’s expectation of design reliability over the service area.

It is anticipated that the document will serve as a recommended best practices reference for developers and suppliers of land mobile communications system design, modeling, simulation and spectrum management software, and automated tools.

TSB-88.3-C was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-8, Mobile and Personal Private Radio Standards Engineering Committee Subcommittee TR-8.18, Wireless Systems Compatibility.

TIA Revises Terminal Equipment Labeling Standard

TIA has revised standard TIA-168-A, Telecommunications – Telephone Terminal Equipment – Labeling Requirement. The new version, TIA-168-B, Telecommunications Telephone Terminal Equipment Labeling Requirements, specifies approved standards for labeling telephone terminal equipment and eliminates the ringer equivalence number (REN) “ZZ” and ringer type “Z” labeling information from the pool of valid equipment codes.  Grandfathering provisions were made for existing equipment using those codes.

The equipment-labeling standard was revised to reflect TIA-968-A-4,Technical Requirements for Connection of Terminal Equipment to the Telephone Network, which eliminated use of the conditional “Z” ringer type for new telephone terminal equipment after August, 2007.

TIA-168-B was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-41, User Premises Telecommunications Requirements Committee Subcommittee TR-41.9, Technical and Administrative Regulatory Considerations.
