Standards Committees Hold Productive Meetings

Highlights from TR-45 Meeting
The TR-45 Committee on Mobile and Personal Communications Systems Standards held its leadership and plenary meetings last week in Chicago. The chairs of the subcommittees delivered annual reports on the status of their committees and plans for the near future.

Other issues discussed included:

  • Suggestions to improve the new Web site
  • Creating guidelines for converting 3GPP2 documents to TIA documents

TR-45 subcommittees will meet June 16-20 in Cancun, Mexico.

Highlights from TR-42 Meeting
The TIA TR-42 Committee on User Premises Telecommunications Cabling Infrastructure met last week in Providence, R.I. All the subcommittees moved projects along and began new ones.

The TR-42.1 subcommittee agreed to start work on a second addendum to ANSI/TIA 942 Data Center Coaxial Cabling Specifications and Application Distances to add additional environmental requirements and requirements for Category 6a cable.

TR-42.7 subcommittee is opening two new projects:

  • A TSB for guidelines for supporting power delivery over balanced twisted-pair cabling
  • A new standard for requirements for field-test instruments and measurements for balanced twisted-pair cabling

TR-42.7 also completed comment resolution on the first round of TIA-568-C.2, Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling Standard Part 2: Balanced Twisted-Pair Cabling Components, and will distribute the document for reballot.

TR-42.2 subcommittee reported that all comments for TIA-570-B-1, Residential Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard, Addendum 1 – Additional Requirements for Broadband Coaxial Cabling, were resolved and the addendum was approved for publication.

TIA to Host Next Meeting of the US TAG to ISO/TC204

The U.S. Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) – the domestic mirror committee to the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 204 for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS); ISO/TC204 – will hold its next meeting on Thursday, June 19, 2008, at TIA headquarters in Arlington, Va.

The meeting will serve as an opportunity to discuss the status of work items in the following subject fields and to formulate the official U.S. position on the advancement and introduction of new work items:

  • WAG1:     Architecture
  • WAG3:     ITS database technology
  • WAG4:     Automatic vehicle and equipment identification
  • WAG5:     Fee and toll collection
  • WAG7:     General fleet management and commercial/freight
  • WAG8:     Public transport and emergency
  • WAG9:     Integrated transport information, management and control
  • WAG10:   Traveler information systems
  • WAG14:   Vehicle/roadway warning and control systems
  • WAG16:   Wide area communications
  • WAG17:   Nomadic devices in ITS systems

As both the ISO/TC204 International Secretariat and the Administrator of the US TAG, TIA plays a central role in helping shape standardization in this emerging and dynamic field. Membership in the US TAG is open to all materially-affected organizations with a U.S. presence. Currently there is no fee to join the US TAG, although sponsorships are welcome.
