Asia: Where the Action Is – TIA 2008 Market Review and Forecast

WirelessPopulationHigh-speed wireless networks and broadband access are key drivers of the telecommunications market in Asia Pacific, which is the leading region for mobile television, according to the just-released TIA 2008 Telecommunications Market Review and Forecast. Despite already having the largest wireless subscriber base in the world at 1.3 billion in 2007, Asia Pacific is still adding more subscribers than it did during the first half of the decade.

The new 400-page TIA report covers wireless and landline, domestic and international, equipment and services, with 450+ tables and figures as well as thought-provoking discussion, interpretation and forecasts through 2011. Every company in the ICT industry should have a copy of the print edition or CD-ROM for all senior employees to study and reference as business plans are developed and budgets are allocated to marketing and R&D.

Several facts and comments from the 20-page Asia Pacific section:

  • A number of governments in the region are actively promoting the development of wireless networks in rural areas, viewing broadband as critical to economic growth and global competitiveness.

  • High-end services are among the market drivers.

  • South Korea and Japan are pioneers in mobile television, but services are being introduced widely in a number of other countries including Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. China will launch its service prior to the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and Taiwan's government has issued mobile TV trial licenses to five consortia.

  • Asia Pacific had the largest broadband market in the world at 141 million subscribers in 2007.

  • For the region as a whole, TIA expects the broadband universe to more than double to 296 million in 2011.

  • The dial-up market expanded 6.6 percent in 2007 following two years of double-digit growth, including a 31.1 percent increase in 2006.

  • China and India had the largest number of wireless subscribers at 540 million and 225 million, respectively, in 2007.
