Who Cares About Electronic Registration Identification?

You do – if you're interested in improving traffic flow and safety on our roads. And TIA wants to help members understand the standards surrounding this important goal.

TIA and the International Organization for Standardization’s Technical Committee 204 (ISO/TC204) for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have just published a suite of technical specifications for Electronic Registration Identification (ERI), a way to uniquely identify road vehicles. This important step introduces an excellent tool for the future management and administration of traffic and transport, including applications in free-flow, multi-lane traffic conditions with the capability to support mobile transactions. Authorities and other road users need a trusted way to identify roaming and other vehicles electronically and ERI is the answer.

Governments in the European Union and elsewhere are considering ERI as legal proof of vehicle identity with potential mandatory uses. The new suite of specifications includes:

  • ISO/TS 24534-1:2007 – Automatic vehicle and equipment identification – Electronic Registration Identification (ERI) for vehicles – Part 1: Architecture
  • ISO/TS 24534-2:2007 – Automatic vehicle and equipment identification – Electronic Registration Identification (ERI) for vehicles Part 2: Operational requirements
  • ISO/TS 24534-3:2008 – Automatic vehicle and equipment identification – Electronic Registration Identification (ERI) for vehicles Part 3: Vehicle data
  • ISO/TS 24534-4:2008 – Automatic vehicle and equipment identification – Electronic Registration Identification (ERI) for vehicles – Part 4: Secure communications using asymmetrical techniques
  • ISO/TS 24534-5:2008 – Automatic vehicle and equipment identification – Electronic Registration Identification (ERI) for vehicles – Part 5: Secure communications using symmetrical techniques

As both the ISO/TC204 International Secretariat and the Administrator of the U.S. TAG – which mirrors the ISO/TC204 committee in the U.S. –  TIA plays a central role in helping shape standardization in this emerging and dynamic field. Membership in the U.S. TAG is open to all materially affected organizations with a U.S. presence. Currently there is no fee to join the U.S. TAG, although sponsorships are welcome. If you would like to participate in the technical work of either group or are interested in attending the next meeting of the U.S. TAG as an observer, please contact Tyler Messa at: tmessa@tiaonline.org or +1.703.907.7743.

TIA Revises Broadcast and Multicast Service Standard

TIA has published a revision of its TIA-1041 standard, Broadcast and Multicast Service in cdma2000® Wireless IP Network. The revision, TIA-1041-A, enhances the standard’s scope in the Broadcast-Multicast Service (BCMCS) field.

This standard defines core network protocols and procedures for the support of BCMCS for cdma2000® networks, in addition to setting the services and architecture around BCMCS.

TIA-1041-A was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-45: Mobile and Personal Communications Systems Engineering Committee's TR-45.6: cdma® Wireless Packet Data Technology Subcommittee. To obtain copies of the document, contact Information Handling Services as +1.800.854.7079 or visit http://global.ihs.com.

*cdma2000® is a registered trademark and certification mark of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA-USA).

TIA Publishes New WLAN Standard

TIA has published a new standard, TIA-1003, Requirements for a Wireless LAN Based IP Telephony Endpoint, adding to a broad catalog of wireless standards for the communications industry.

TIA-1003 specifies the minimum requirements for various performance aspects of WLAN IP telephony endpoints operating in a business environment, including media and protocol-specific call control interoperability; acoustic performance; telephony feature support; safety; electromagnetic compatibility; and environmental performance.  Due to the significant growth of Wi-Fi Alliance-certified products on the market, the TIA-1003 standard was developed to focus on IEEE 802.11 technologies.

TIA-1003 was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-41: User Premises Telecommunications Requirements Engineering Committee’s TR-41.4: IP Telephony Infrastructure and Endpoints Subcommittee. To obtain copies of the document, contact Information Handling Services at +1.800.854.7179 or visit http://global.ihs.com.
