TIA, ISO/TC204 Making Excellent Progress on ITS Communications Standards

The International Organization for Standardization’s Technical Committee 204 (ISO/TC204) for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), is pleased to announce the upcoming publication of ISO/IS 24101: CALM (Continuous Access for Land Mobiles) – Application Management.

Under the jurisdiction of Working Group 16 (Wide Area Communications) and led by the United States, the CALM  family of standards aims to provide a comprehensive set of wireless air interface protocols and parameters for high-speed vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure and infrastructure-to-infrastructure ITS communications.  CALM standards will enable a wide range of ITS services, such as collision avoidance systems for passenger vehicles, based on ad hoc networks linking multiple vehicles.

More important, with nearly 25 CALM-related standards and technical reports currently under development – as well as undergoing field testing in both Europe and East Asia – CALM will provide seamless wireless communications and Internet access for ITS services on a global scale. Current CALM projects include:

ISO/11766: CALM – Lawful interception

  • ISO/11769: CALM – Data retention for law enforcement in ITS
  • ISO/11915: CALM – Applications using IEEE 802.11
  • ISO/21210: CALM – Networking protocols
  • ISO/21212: CALM – 2G cellular (To be published Spring 2008)
  • ISO/21213: CALM – 3G cellular (To be published Spring 2008)
  • ISO/21214: CALM – Infrared systems (Published in 2006)
  • ISO/21215: CALM – DSRC Microwave at 5.9GHz
  • ISO/21216-1: CALM – Millimetre wave, Physical Layer – Part 1
  • ISO/21216-2: CALM – Millimetre wave, MAC-related parameters – Part 2
  • ISO/21217: CALM – Architecture
  • ISO/21218: CALM – Medium service access points
  • ISO/24101-1: CALM – Application management – Part 1: General requirements (Published in 2008)
  • ISO/24101-2: CALM – Application management – Part 2: Conformance test
  • ISO/24102: CALM – Management
  • ISO/24103: CALM – Media-adapted interface layer (MAIL)
  • ISO/25111: CALM – ITS using public networks – General requirements
  • ISO/25112: CALM – Mobile wireless broadband using IEEE 802.16e/IEEE/802.16g
  • ISO/25113: CALM – Mobile wireless broadband using HC-SDMA
  • ISO/29281: CALM – Non-IP communication mechanisms
  • ISO/29282: CALM – Applications using satellite
  • ISO/29283: CALM – Applications using IEEE 802.20

Working Group 16 will hold its next meeting June 9-13, 2008, in Paris.  Future meetings of Working Group 16 will take place on the following dates:

  • September 1-5, 2008, Chicago, Ill.
  • December 1-5, 2008, Bangkok, Thailand

If you wish to participate in any of these meetings, please contact Tyler Messa (contact information provided below). Organizations may send Experts to participate internationally or as part of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (U.S. TAG), the domestic mirror committee and official U.S. delegation to ISO/TC204.

As both the ISO/TC204 International Secretariat and the Administrator of the U.S. TAG, TIA plays a central role in helping shape standardization in this emerging and dynamic field.  Membership in the U.S. TAG is open to all materially affected organizations with a U.S. presence.  Currently there is no fee to join the U.S. TAG, although sponsorships are welcome.  If you would like to participate in the technical work of either group, or are interested in attending the next meeting of the U.S. TAG as an observer, please contact Tyler Messa at: tmessa@tiaonline.org or +1.703.907.7743

CMAS Key Topic at TR-45 Plenary Meeting

TIA's TR-45: Mobile and Personal Communications Standards Engineering Committee held its leadership plenary meeting in Las Vegas, Nev., in a meeting scheduled to lead into TIA's Wireless Communications Division meeting, also in Las Vegas last week.

The committee met to discuss issues of significance among the various subcommittees, including standards questions pertaining to the commercial mobile alert system (CMAS), also being discussed by the Wireless Communications Division from a policy perspective. The TR-45.2: Core Networks Engineering Subcommittee and ATIS WTSC G3GSN are jointly developing a CMAS specification for the C-interface between the government alerting gateway and the service provider CMSP gateway.

The group also addressed more clerical issues, such as securing the preferred publication protocols for new documents, establishing correspondence with ATIS for a joint FTP site for document publication, and holding elections for officer positions in August.

For more information on TR-45 and its subcommittees, please contact Peter Bogard at +1.703.907.7961 or pbogard@tiaonline.org.

TR-8 Publishes New Project 25 Documents

As part of its ongoing work with the Project 25 (P25) public safety standards suite, TIA's TR-8: Mobile and Personal Private Radio Standards Engineering Committee set in motion the process for new standards by publishing three new documents in the P25 family last week.

Project 25 supports eight standards interfaces for public safety radios, including common air interfaces, network interfaces and radio-to-data peripherals. TR-8 is currently developing a compliance assessment program, run through the National Institute of Standards and Technology but in compliance with TIA standards, on testing standards and mechanisms for various radio-related functions. The documents published last week address issues concerning several of those interfaces and services supported over those interfaces.

For more information on TR-8, contact Ronda Coulter at +1.703.907.7974 or rcoulter@tiaonline.org.
