TIA's Green Initiative Brings EIATRACK, Additional Resources, to ICT Industry

Responding to current environmental and energy trends within the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, TIA has mounted its own green initiative, building on a number of resources that include EIATRACK. EIATRACK is an online service providing global environmental intelligence and product-oriented regulatory tracking for the electronics industry.

EIATRACK's impressive suite of tools includes regulatory alerts about new or imminent legislative developments and policies; weekly e-mail bulletins; quarterly newsletters on topics such as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances (RoHS), product stewardship and restricted substances; webinars and special reports.

Whether a company is seeking to do business in Europe, Asia Pacific, North America or Latin America, EIATRACK produces the most up-to-date environmental product-compliance information produced by legal and technical subject-matter experts available anywhere in the world.

The items below are a sample of the program's coverage, or go to http://www.eiatrack.org/ for more information on features and to test the service by requesting a trial subscription.

Energy Efficiency Proposals in Argentina

ArgentinaTwo new bills presented within weeks of each other in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies call for energy efficiency agencies and standards that would impact the electronics sector. Both proposals come on the heels of the late-2007 enactment of newly-elected President Kirchner’s National Program for Rational and Efficient Energy Use (PRONUREE in Decree 140/07). These two bills may only be the beginning of initiatives seeking to flesh out that new policy.

European Commission Proposes Amendment of Article 6(2) of Battery Directive

EUOn April 17, 2008, the European Commission submitted to the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament a proposal for an amendment of Article 6(2) of the Battery Directive. The proposed amendment makes clear that batteries must not be placed on the Community market after September 26, 2008, if they do not comply with the Directive, but “non-compliant” batteries placed on the market before that date would not have to be withdrawn. This amendment had been announced earlier this year by the Commission as a “fast track” improvement of EU legislation to reduce administrative burdens.
